Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence Statement Congratulates Massachusetts for Court Ruling in Favor of the Assault Weapon Ban
Providence, Rhode Island (April 9, 2018) – The Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence (RICAGV) applauds Massachusetts for consistently having the strongest gun laws in the nation, policy that has resulted in the state having the lowest death
rate in the country.
This is after a federal court ruled against the National Rifle Association’s challenge to the state’s assault weapon ban. U.S. District Judge William Young ruled the ban is in fact constitutional stating: “The AR-15 and its analogs, along with large capacity magazines, are simply not weapons within the original meaning of the individual constitutional rights to ‘bear arms.'”
RICAGV maintains that Rhode Island will be next to ban dangerous military-style assault weapons, like the AR-15 that took 17 innocent lives in Parkland, Florida.
“The Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence must join Massachusetts and ban military style assault weapons.” Said RICAGV President, Linda Finn. “Banning these dangerous weapons of war is an important step to saving lives in our communities.”
The Coalition is doubling down on their efforts to ban assault weapons with a community lobby day at the Rhode Island State House on Tuesday, April 10 th at 3PM.
RICAGV Responds to Tragic Mass Shooting at Brown University
As a community, a city, and a state, we are shattered. An assailant took the lives of two students at Brown University and injured nine others. This is the third month in a row this country has experienced a mass shooting and the 75th shooting on a school campus this year.
Oscar-Nominated Film Screening of “Death by Numbers”
RICAGV hosted the Rhode Island debut screening of “Death By Numbers.” Held at the Providence Public Library the Oscar nominated film, directed by Kim A. Snyder, was attend by writer and participant Sam Fuentes who spoke with the audience at a Q&A session that followed.
