Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence Statement on NRA Involvement in 2016 Presidential Election
Providence, Rhode Island (January 19, 2018)- The Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence (RICAGV) is extremely concerned by the McClatchy report which highlights the National Rifle Association (NRA)’s potentially illegal involvement in the 2016 election. At a time when the nation is still grieving from mass shootings like the tragedy that occurred in Las Vegas, in addition to the every day homicides that impact Americans, the NRA’s influence is particularly disturbing.
“This report is so disappointing to me as advocate for gun violence prevention in Rhode Island because of all the progress we have seen in the state,” Said RICAGV President, Linda Finn. “Rhode Islanders along with millions of other Americans want to see common sense gun legislation that makes our children and our neighborhoods safer at a time when the NRA is using their agenda to unduly influence elections.”
We need to consider the importance of grassroots elections, and the danger of allowing organizations that have supported this potentially illegal collusion with foreign states in the 2016 Presidential Election. We need to consider the NRA’s agenda. We need to do all of this in addition to our honest work in preventing gun violence and gun deaths in our communities.
